Port Whine Grows

Well, now. It seems that both sides of the aisle are still smoldering from last week’s US Ports contract negotiations. Is it that surprising to anyone that Americans are supsicous about a company that hails from the United Arab Emirates? The White House has decided to call the calling off, off by accepting a 45-day security review by Dubai Ports World.

The fact that our xenophobia is showing does not surprised me in the least. One Republican lawmaker is claiming that Dubai Ports World has ties to Osama binLaden and the Taliban. Really? I can’t find that evidence – show me. While Democrats are opposed to the deal, now, is because a secretive committee conducts the review. The findings are only shown to the President (Yea, Dick Cheney).

Of course, the whole thing is a comedy of errors. Dumb Dumb (further proving my nickname) had no clue about the deal in the first place. I am guessing that ShrubCo has never read, “How to Win Friends and Influence People.” An of course, I can't help myself and wonder what will Halliburton gain from this? You speak like a rat, you like a rat, then you are a dirty rat.

Xenophobia and fear is all I can come up with. Major ports facilities are owned almost entirely of foreign entities, including companies owned by the communist Chinese government. If we have anything to fear, it's our own stupidity and laziness.

Count me in with the xenophobes, but why are we letting foreign interests control our ports? It's not the fact that the UAE has "Arab" in the name, and I'm not against foreign ownership per se, but shouldn't we be in control of our own PORTS at least? I've already been told this is all Clinton's fault; that doesn't change anything for me. Was it a good idea then? Probably not. Is it a good idea now, post 9/11? I really don't think so.

Ginger, if you only knew how much of our transportation lines, major defense and electronic suppliers were foreign owned, you would be shaking your head. People were about the gas, but the majority of important electronics and communications equipment comes from Asia. That was outsources way before Clinton. It's no one administration's fault, but the fault of political capital of our leaders in Congress.
